Alternative Approach to Sleep Apnea

Sleep is amazing. It’s one of my favorite things to do. When the sun goes down, I get excited about crawling into my comfy bed and sawing the Zs. To me, sleep is a treat, a rejuvenation, and even a sweet escape. Sleep is everything.

But for some, sleep can be elusive and uncomfortable. Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous sleep disorder that affects roughly 22 million Americans. Sleep apnea causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start. Those affected by the disorder often snore throughout the night and still feel tired when they wake up in the morning.

CPAP machines are the norm for many people who suffer from this affliction. A mask with plastic tubing connected to a machine offers some relief, but the device is cumbersome and uncomfortable. Not to mention, it can make sharing a bed with someone a bit more difficult. What is a sleep apnea sufferer supposed to do?

Introducing Inspire – a new and advanced way to deal with sleep apnea. Inspire is a small device implanted into the patient’s body, like a pacemaker. The FDA-approved sleep apnea treatment involves an outpatient procedure to implant the device with only 3 small incisions.Dr. Moorehead displaying Inspire Before a sleep apnea sufferer goes to bed, he/she just turns on Inspire and goes to sleep. Inspire does that rest! The device sends a gentle pulse that moves the tongue out of the way to keep the airway unobstructed. No masks. No tubes. No loud machines. Sheer genius.

Here at Texas Ear, Nose, & Throat Specialists, our own Dr. Cary Moorhead performs this new procedure for sleep apnea patients. Dr. Moorhead is giving hope to patients that have not benefited from CPAP machines and have suffered from the health and quality of life that sleep apnea can cause. CPAP machines can be uncomfortable, restricting, loud, and claustrophobic. Dr. Moorhead and Inspire are a welcome respite.

If you or someone you love suffers from sleep apnea, head on over to and do some research. If CPAP has not worked, or the device is just inconvenient, the Inspire device may be the relief you’re looking for. Don’t lose another good night’s sleep.
