Ear problems can be a huge source of discomfort for an individual. If you are feeling irritation or pain in your ear or experiencing hearing loss, it could be the result of a variety of ear problems. It is best to treat your ear concern as soon as you can to minimize any negative effects it may have. Below is a list of common ear problems that can affect individuals.

1. Ear infections

Most ear pain is caused by ear infections. Ear infections are particularly prevalent in children. While some infections may clear up on their own, some require treatment from a doctor.  Signs of an ear infection include pain, fever, fatigue, or difficulty hearing. There are two major types of ear infections: inner and outer.

  • Inner infections - These typically affect children. They are infections of the inner ear tube that connects the eardrum to the back of the nose. These infections are often caused by viruses, such as the flu or a cold.
  • Outer infections - These infections are particularly common in older adults. Outer infections affect the ear canal and are typically caused by a bacterial infection. People who wear hearing aids or frequently use earplugs are prone to developing this kind of infection. Other people susceptible to outer ear infections are swimmers or those with skin concerns such as psoriasis or eczema.

2. Glue ear

Glue ear is very common in children under seven and is the top reason for hearing issues in this age group. Glue ear is when the middle of the ear becomes filled with a glue-like fluid. When this fluid builds up, it stops sound vibrations from being carried through the ear, and as a result, hearing is compromised. A child who exhibits signs of hearing loss may be suffering from glue ear.

3. Ear popping or ear congestion

Ear congestion is when the inner ear tube becomes clogged. This makes it feel as though there is pressure in your ear. Sometimes ear congestion hurts or distorts one’s hearing. Ear congestion is often caused when the sinuses are also congested, such as when someone is sick with a cold or flu.

4. Tinnitus

Tinnitus is when you can hear a sound in your ear that isn’t coming from an outside source. It is often described as a ringing, buzzing, or white noise sound in the ear. Tinnitus can be temporary or long-term. It affects people of all ages but is most prevalent in older adults. Tinnitus can be the result of age or illness. Overexposure to loud noise can also cause tinnitus.

5. Excess of earwax

While earwax naturally forms in your ear and exits normally, it can sometimes build up and block your ears. Additionally, using cotton buds or your fingers to attempt to remove it can cause a blockage. An excess or blockage of earwax can cause undesirable symptoms, such as difficulty hearing or pain.
