Since 1927, May has been celebrated as Better Hearing & Speech Month. This special month-long event was created by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to raise public awareness and understanding of hearing and communication disorders. At Texas ENT Specialists, we fully support the mission of Better Hearing & Speech Month 2023.

What Is Better Hearing & Speech Month About?

Better Hearing & Speech Month is primarily about spreading awareness and information to the public about hearing and speech problems, how they’re caused, and how impactful they can be on people’s lives. Unfortunately, many children and adults suffering from these disorders do not receive the treatment they need. Additionally, hearing and communication disorders do not always get taken as seriously as they should be by the public. These are issues that Better Hearing & Speech Month is attempting to correct.

The Serious Effects of Hearing and Speech Disorders

For those who don’t have hearing or speech problems, it can be difficult to understand how many negative effects they can cause. When you have trouble hearing or communicating with people, it can prevent you from forming and maintaining relationships. These disorders often cause people to struggle in social situations, which can lead to self-isolation, depression, and anxiety.

Speech and hearing conditions are very common and can affect both children and adults. Although treatments such as hearing aids, speech therapy, and certain surgical procedures can make a huge difference for people with these disorders, only a small percentage of them receive quality treatment. This is why special events like Better Hearing & Speech Month are so important.

What Can Be Done to Prevent Hearing Loss?

Helping people avoid hearing problems is an important aspect of Better Hearing & Speech Month. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the best ways to protect their ears and keep their hearing intact. You can help prevent significant damage to your ears and future hearing issues by following these tips:

  • Avoid listening to excessively loud music
  • Limit the amount of time you spend wearing headphones
  • Use hearing protection such as earplugs or noise-canceling headphones when around loud noises
  • See an ENT doctor as soon as you notice pain, discomfort, or ringing in the ears
  • Use hearing protection when operating a firearm

How Can You Contribute To Better Hearing & Speech Month?

If you’d like to make a contribution to Better Hearing & Speech Month, there are several things you can do to support the campaign:

  • Spread the word about Better Hearing & Speech Month by posting on social media and/or telling friends, family members, and co-workers about it
  • Volunteer at local events that are held to promote the initiative
  • Partner with organizations that support Better Hearing & Speech Month for promotion and fundraising
