Thyroid masses are abnormal growths in the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a small gland located at the front of the neck that is part of the endocrine system. The thyroid produces and releases thyroid hormones which regulate functions such as body temperature, digestion, and certain heart functions.
Before treatment, an examination and testing will be required to determine the reason for the mass, and to see if it is cancerous. In some cases, if the mass isn’t cancerous and doesn’t seem to be growing, no treatment is required. Other treatment methods include thyroid hormone therapy or a surgery in which the mass is removed. Some masses may require surgery if they are interfering with breathing or swallowing.
If the thyroid begins to grow, masses can form. The cause of this is not precisely known. These masses can often form in those with a family history of thyroid masses and those who do not get enough iodine. While thyroid masses may seem scary, they are rarely cancerous.
