There are certain treatment options available for some thyroid issues before surgery is required, but for other issues, surgery may be the only option. A thyroid imbalance can cause the thyroid to overproduce hormones, create weight gain or loss, and cause mood changes, fatigue, and other symptoms. At Texas ENT Specialists, we are experts in thyroid surgery and we are ready to help you.

Thyroid Surgery Procedure

Thyroid surgery uses general anesthesia to keep you comfortably asleep during the procedure. This helps relax your muscles and not feel any pain while the surgery is taking place. An incision will be made along a crease at the base of your neck. By placing the incision in a crease, any scarring will be less visible. Then the surgeon will remove either a portion of the gland or the entire gland.

They have provided me with the best experience and treatment I have ever received from a medical professional. They are truly an expert in the field. From diagnosing, to surgery, to post opp. follow-ups and ongoing care they surpassed my expectation.

Conditions Treated Using Thyroid Surgery

Thyroid surgery can be used to treat conditions such as:

  • Thyroid cancer
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Thyroid goiters
  • Hyperthyroidism that has not responded to medication

Benefits of Thyroid Surgery

Thyroid surgery is able to help patients remove any masses that may be present. Removing these masses is important as they may be cancerous, compress the trachea, or make swallowing difficult.

Having thyroid issues can also cause other side effects that may impact your daily life. Thyroid surgery removes part, or the complete thyroid gland, providing you with permanent relief. The procedure also leaves only a small scar and allows you to resume your regular activities within a few days.

Who Is a Candidate for Thyroid Surgery?

Our physicians at Texas ENT Specialists can evaluate candidates for thyroid surgery and will discuss your symptoms, examine the thyroid, and go over your treatment options. Most candidates for the procedure have an enlarged thyroid, thyroid mass, or thyroid cancer. Some patients with other thyroid conditions may also qualify if they have been unsuccessful or unable to treat their thyroid conditions through medication.

Your Thyroid Surgery Procedure

Prior to your surgery, you will be evaluated to ensure that the procedure is the right fit for your needs. Once you’ve been cleared for surgery, you will be given general anesthesia to help relax you and ensure you’re comfortable. The surgeon will make a small incision at the crease of your neck, and will then remove a part or the entirety of the thyroid. You may need to stay overnight to have your recovery monitored, but then you’ll be free to continue your recovery at home.
