What to Expect During Your Hearing Aid Fitting

Programming:  During the appointment, the audiologist will program the hearing aids based upon the results from your hearing test by using specific software designed by the hearing aid manufacturer.  The software uses algorithms that identify your hearing needs and prescribe settings that are unique to your hearing loss.  The programmed hearing aids are set to maximize your hearing potential in various listening situations.

Measure:  Once the hearing aids are programmed, we then measure how well the hearing aids are performing using an objective testing process called Real Ear Measurement (REM).  The REM test uses a thin tube that slides into your ear and past the end of the hearing aid. The REM’s tube is connected to equipment that measures loudness at different frequencies and is designed to ensure the correct amount of amplification at specific pitches is matched to the hearing loss you experience.  In addition to the REM testing, we also listen to subjective input from your and your family.

Educate:  We want you to have a great experience with your hearing aids. Many hearing aids have additional features as well as apps and accessories that may be important for your hearing health goals. We’ll guide you through the options that are available to you.  Additionally, we will teach you everything you need to know about how to care for your aids.  Proper care and maintenance of your hearing aids are essential for both new and previous hearing aid patients.

Hearing in Difficult Situations

One of the most common symptoms of hearing loss is having trouble hearing in noisy situations. Hearing technology offers features to assist with these challenging environments.

  • Directional Microphones: These devices are designed to reduce the background noise by focusing on the sounds happening directly in front of you.  Specifically, the people speaking directly to you will be amplified while the less important surrounding information will not be.
  • Wind Noise Reduction:  As the name implies, the hearing aid will recognize the wind as background noise and it will adjust the hearing aid to suppress that noise so that you can hear other sounds around you.
  • Remote microphones: This accessory can be added to a hearing aid which provides exceptional speech understanding in challenging listening situations.

Benefits of Hearing Aid Programming

Hearing aids are intricate devices that need to be programmed to match your hearing profile. The results of your hearing test provide the information needed to achieve this, however, our hearing healthcare expert will set the programs and make any minor adjustments so that you get the most from your hearing aids.  Given that you’ll be wearing them for several hours each day, it’s vital that the devices are always comfortable for you.
