Texas ENT Specialists can perform this surgery for patients across Houston. There are several types of surgery available depending on your specific needs, including those to correct the eardrum and the middle ear.

Types of Hearing Repair Surgery

Your hearing repair surgery will depend on the cause of the hearing loss and where it is located within or near the ear. Some of the most common types of hearing repair surgery include:

Stapedectomy

This surgery can help patients who have otosclerosis, a condition that affects the bone in the middle of the ear. The surgery works by replacing part of their ear with a prosthetic solution. This bone, called the “stapes”, helps sound travel from the middle ear to the inner ear. With otosclerosis, the bone does not properly develop and prevents the vibrating and transmission of sound. During the surgery, the surgeon will enter from the ear canal to replace the bone with a prosthetic piece.

Tympanoplasty

This surgery is used to help patients repair or replace an eardrum that has been injured. This can be due to repeated ear infections, traumatic injuries, or other factors. Using a graft of tissue from somewhere else on the body, the eardrum is repaired — or in some cases, entirely replaced. This procedure is also performed through the ear canal and leads to improved hearing and function.

They have provided me with the best experience and treatment I have ever received from a medical professional. They are truly an expert in the field. From diagnosing, to surgery, to post opp. follow-ups and ongoing care they surpassed my expectation.

Conditions Treated through Surgery

The primary uses for surgery are to replace or repair parts of the ear to restore hearing. This can include the eardrum, middle ear, or other areas.

Benefits of Surgery to Repair Hearing

Restoring your hearing is the ultimate goal of the procedure. By restoring your hearing, you’ll be able to lead a more comfortable life and have less trouble with everyday activities such as talking to others.

Restored hearing can also assist you while watching television and listening to music. For those who receive a tympanoplasty, you may also have less frequent ear infections once the eardrum has been replaced.

Your Treatment Experience

Prior to surgery, you will be able to meet with a provider to walk you through each step of the surgery and explain the recovery timeline. Certain ear surgeons use local anesthesia, while others use general anesthesia. Depending on the procedure, you may require an overnight stay in the hospital before starting your recovery at home.

Once at home, you should rest and avoid strenuous activities for a few days. Your complete recovery may take a week or more. Typically, patients have seen an improvement in their hearing 3-5 weeks after surgery.
