Ear Surgeries to Repair Structural Damage

The surgical approach will depend on various factors, including the extent of damage to the ear or if a tumor is involved. Restoring hearing and repairing any visible aesthetic issues are a primary concern.

Tympanoplasty

Eardrum damage, often resulting from trauma or persistent ear infections, typically necessitates a tympanoplasty for repair. This minimally invasive procedure is conducted through the ear canal and has minimal scarring. During a tympanoplasty, a tissue graft is utilized to repair or completely replace the eardrum, with total replacement required only in cases of significant eardrum damage. This procedure aims to restore hearing and improve ear function.

Ossicular Chain Reconstruction

This surgery focuses on the ossicles, the chain of tiny bones in the middle ear that are crucial for hearing. Ossicular chain reconstruction aims to repair both the eardrum and the ossicles (bones), effectively reconnecting the complete sequence. During the procedure, the surgeon elevates the eardrum to examine the ossicles. If necessary, one of the bones may be removed, reshaped, and repositioned. In some instances, all three middle ear bones are replaced to restore proper function and improve hearing.

Stapedectomy

The “stapedes” are tiny bones in the middle ear that conduct sound. A stapedectomy may be necessary when the stapes bone is underdeveloped due to genetics or damaged from hardening tissue. This surgery involves removing and replacing the affected stapes with a prosthetic device. The procedure restores hearing by enabling sound and vibrations to be transmitted effectively through the ear.

Ear Surgery & Recovery: Expectations

After ear surgery, patients typically need about two to three months for a full recovery. In the initial days following the procedure, it’s common to experience ear pain, headaches, dizziness, and a sensation of fullness in the ear. This stuffed feeling may persist longer than the other symptoms but should improve gradually over the next few weeks as healing occurs. At your two-week follow-up, our ENT surgeon will remove the gauze packing from the ear canal and clean it gently, providing significant relief from the feeling of fullness. You might notice some drainage of bloody fluid during this time.

During recovery, keep water out of your ear and avoid strenuous activities such as lifting heavy objects or exercising. Avoid heightened pressure on your ears in activities such as flying or scuba diving and avoid loud environments. Your ears may be more sensitive to sound initially.

Results After Ear Surgery

Some patients may experience an immediate improvement in their hearing following surgery, but significant changes typically occur within two to four weeks. Many individuals will continue to notice enhancements in their hearing over the next couple of months as the ear continues to heal and adjust.
