An adenoidectomy is the surgical removal of the adenoid glands located above the roof of the mouth and behind the nose. In many cases, especially in children, these glands can become swollen and enlarged, leading to chronic infections.
The Adenoidectomy Procedure
Before the adenoidectomy, you’ll have a consultation with one of our ENT doctors to assess whether the surgery is appropriate for you or your child. This will involve an examination and a discussion of symptoms. Once the decision is made, the operation will be scheduled. General anesthesia will be given to ensure comfort during the procedure.
A device will be placed in the mouth to keep it open, and the adenoids will be removed using specialized instruments. An electric tool may be utilized to control any bleeding. After a few hours of recovery, you or your child can go home to rest. Recovery ranges from a few days to two weeks. Planning to stay home from school or work is advised, particularly for children. This can help to reduce the chances of infection while the body is healing.
