Symptoms

While there are various treatment options for some thyroid conditions, surgery may be the only effective solution for others. An imbalance in thyroid hormones can lead to symptoms such as weight fluctuations, mood changes, fatigue, and more.

How Thyroid Surgery Works

Thyroid surgery is performed under general anesthesia, ensuring you remain comfortably asleep and pain-free throughout. An incision is strategically made along a natural crease at the base of your neck, minimizing the visibility of any scarring. The surgeon will then proceed to remove either a portion of the thyroid gland or the entire gland as needed.

Thyroid surgery is utilized to address various conditions, including the following:

  • Thyroid cancer
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Thyroid goiters
  • Hyperthyroidism that has not improved with medication

Thyroid Surgery Benefits

Thyroid surgery effectively addresses any masses in the thyroid gland, which may be cancerous, compress the windpipe, or lead to swallowing difficulties. By removing these masses, patients can alleviate symptoms that disrupt daily life. This procedure involves the removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, offering lasting relief. Additionally, it results in only a small scar, allowing for smoother recovery.

Candidates for Thyroid Surgery

At Texas ENT Specialists, our experienced physicians carefully evaluate candidates for thyroid surgery by discussing symptoms, performing a thorough examination of the thyroid, and reviewing available treatment options. Most candidates seeking surgery typically present with an enlarged thyroid, thyroid masses, or thyroid cancer. In addition, patients with other thyroid conditions, such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, may qualify for surgery if they have not responded well to medication, have difficulty managing their condition, or are experiencing complications that significantly impact their quality of life.

Your Thyroid Surgery Procedure

Before your surgery at Texas ENT Specialists in Houston, you'll undergo a thorough evaluation to determine if the procedure is appropriate for your condition. Once approved, you'll receive general anesthesia to ensure your comfort and relaxation throughout the surgery. Our ENT surgeon will create a small incision in the natural crease of your neck, allowing for the removal of either a portion or the entire thyroid gland. You may need to stay overnight for monitoring, but you can continue your recovery at home afterward. Plan to take 10 to 14 days off work and avoid driving until you can comfortably turn your head. Full recovery can take another 4 to 12 weeks as the area fully heals.
