What is a VNG Test?

A VNG (Videonystagmography) test is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the function of your inner ear and its role in balance and dizziness. The test helps your provider determine how well your inner ear is functioning by tracking eye movements through specialized goggles equipped with small cameras. VNG testing is commonly used to diagnose balance disorders, vertigo, and other inner-ear dysfunction conditions. The test results provide valuable insights into the cause of dizziness, allowing for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

What is the Test Like to Experience?

A VNG test typically takes about one hour to complete. During the test, you will perform simple tasks, such as following visual targets and changing positions on an exam table. You may also have warm or cool air introduced into your ear canals to stimulate your inner ear and observe its response. While the test is non-invasive, some patients may feel brief dizziness or mild discomfort, especially during the balance portion of the exam. These sensations usually pass quickly.
