What is Nasal Turbinate Reduction?

Nasal turbinate reduction is a procedure that reduces the size of swollen or enlarged turbinates, an inner nose structure that helps filter and humidify the air we breathe. When turbinates enlarge, they obstruct airflow and cause chronic nasal congestion, making breathing difficult.

What are the Nasal Turbinates?

Nasal turbinates are small, bony structures located inside the nasal passages. Covered with a soft tissue lining, they play a crucial role in regulating airflow and filtering the air we breathe. Turbinates help warm and humidify incoming air, trapping dust, allergens, and particles before they reach the lungs. There are three sets of turbinates on each side of the nose, called superior, middle, and inferior. When turbinates become enlarged due to allergies, infections, or structural issues, they can obstruct airflow and lead to chronic congestion or breathing difficulties.

What is the Procedure?

Nasal turbinate reduction is typically performed in the office with only local anesthesia. Two approaches are available:

Turbinate Outfracture, Coblation, and Radiofrequency Reduction

These minimally invasive procedures allow for the reduction of nasal turbinates without removing any tissue or bone. Using specialized devices that emit heat or energy waves, the soft tissue of the turbinates is carefully targeted. The energy causes controlled scar tissue to form, shrinking the turbinates over time. For enhanced results, turbinate outfracture may also be performed, which repositions the turbinates to create more space in the nasal cavity. These quick procedures are performed under topical and local anesthesia, usually taking less than 20 minutes.

Surgical Turbinate Reduction

In cases where surgery is necessary, it will be performed under general anesthesia. The procedure involves removing a small portion of the turbinate bone to reduce its size and improve airflow. Additionally, a medical device may treat the tissue surrounding the turbinates, further opening the nasal passages. Surgical turbinate reduction provides lasting relief for patients with more severe cases of nasal obstruction.

Who Is a Candidate for Turbinate Reduction?

  • Individuals suffering from chronic nasal congestion or difficulty breathing
  • Patients whose symptoms have not improved with medications such as nasal sprays or antihistamines
  • Those experiencing frequent nasal blockages due to allergies or other nasal conditions
  • People with enlarged turbinates caused by chronic inflammation or structural issues

What is the Recovery After Nasal Turbinate Reduction?

Recovery from nasal turbinate reduction is typically swift, with most patients resuming normal activities within a few days. Mild swelling or discomfort may occur, but these symptoms usually resolve within a week. It is necessary to avoid strenuous activities and follow the specific aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing.
