When patients with chronic sinusitis and or nasal polyps fail medical therapy, surgery can offer a safe and highly effective treatment option to provide long-term sustained relief. At Texas ENT Specialists, our surgeons can provide you with innovative therapeutic options to help treat your chronic conditions and help to improve your overall quality of life. These procedures are performed endoscopically (whereby the surgeon utilizes a small endoscope connected to a camera and video tower, allowing high definition and illumination of the sinonasal cavity). During this, the surgeon is able to safely “open” the sinus cavities and remove polyps and other forms of inflamed tissue causing your chronic conditions.

How the Procedure Works

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, which will help ensure you are relaxed and comfortable throughout the process. No external incisions are used, as the entire procedure is performed endoscopically through the nose. An endoscopic camera connected to a video tower provides a high-definition illuminated view of the sinus and nasal cavity. Endoscopic instruments are then used to open the sinus cavities and remove polyps and/or inflamed tissue.

Who is a Candidate?

Patients who have experienced chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps due to chronic sinusitis may be a candidate for the surgery. Most qualifying patients have tried medication or other treatments, but have not been successful. Our providers at Texas ENT Specialists can assess if you are an ideal candidate for a nasal polyp or chronic sinusitis surgery.

Your Surgical Experience

Prior to surgery, you will be evaluated to ensure that this is the correct treatment for you. Your provider will review your symptoms and perform a thorough physical examination. The surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia. An endoscope is inserted into the nasal cavity, providing an illuminated high-definition video image. Endoscopic sinus surgery is then performed. The procedure, depending on the level of complexity, may take roughly 1-3 hours, after which dissolvable, lightweight packing may be placed. The procedure is outpatient surgery after which you can anticipate a one-week recovery timetable.

What is recovery like after surgery?

The surgery does not require an overnight stay, so you will be able to recover at home. The recovery should be short, and most patients do not experience any swelling or bruising. You may be asked to use a nasal spray or rinse after the surgery.

What type of anesthesia is used?

General anesthesia is used during sinus surgery. The anesthesia will help keep you relaxed and ensure that you do not feel pain during the procedure.
